A local couple, ages 87 and 83, falling victim to the Microsoft Support Scam is the basis for this Coconut Creek Police Department Scam Alert. Last week, they received a pop-up on their computer, supposedly from Microsoft, telling them to enter their phone number. Once they did that, the scammers, pretending to be from Microsoft Security Support, told them that hackers had taken over their bank accounts. The only way to save their finances, they said, was to go buy gift cards and give them the numbers on them. This of course is a major red flag that it's a scam. The scammers stayed on the phone with them the whole time, telling them where to buy the gift cards and how much money to load into them. Eventually they figured out it was phony. But it was too late. So, if you get a similar pop-up or phone call from some fraudster telling you they're from Microsoft, just hang up.
