Localized Flooding: City Response and Stormwater Update

Attention Coconut Creek Residents:

We understand that the current localized flooding is a source of concern and we want to assure you that the City of Coconut Creek is actively responding.

How the City Is Responding

Right now, our Transportation and Stormwater Division crews are deployed throughout the city, continuously inspecting and clearing city-maintained catch basins to ensure our drainage systems can provide maximum relief.

Why Drainage Is Taking Longer

Please know that our stormwater infrastructure is proactively maintained and is operating as designed. However, the ongoing heavy rainfall across all of South Florida has temporarily saturated the soil and filled the regional canal networks to capacity. Due to these conditions, it is taking longer than usual for the water to drain from local streets. The system is actively working to move the water out as quickly as the regional waterways will allow.

Who Maintains Your Drainage System?

As far as private drainage systems are concerned (managed by HOA's and businesses), we are asking you to continue keeping your catch basins clear of debris to help surface water drain properly as conditions become favorable.

If you are unsure who manages your drainage system, please reference the City Map linked below. In general, homes adjacent to City roads have drainage systems managed by the City. Other communities have drainage systems managed by their HOA.

How Stormwater Systems Protect Property

It is important to understand the stormwater systems are designed to protect property in stages. This means when unusual rain events happen, such as the one we are experiencing now, it is expected for roadways to flood once canals reach capacity. This design is to protect structures (homes, businesses, etc.) from excessive stormwater.

Your Safety Remains Our Top Priority

Your safety remains our top priority. While we wait for the water levels to naturally recede, we strongly urge residents to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas. We will continue monitoring the situation around the clock and working diligently on your behalf. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as our teams work to keep our community safe.
